Is Liechtenstein Worth Visiting? Top 4 Reasons to Skip

Long wooden covered structure elevated on angled supports spans across a shallow turquoise river, with gravel banks beneath and leafless trees nearby. Snow capped mountains rise in the background under a clear blue sky, creating a contrast between the rustic structure and the alpine landscape.

So, as we were scrambling through Switzerland, we hit up a lot of different places. They ranged from Honestly Do Not Recommend (lookin’ at you, Genoa) to Pretty Damn Cool (Lugano and Zurich). The tiny little micro-state of Liechtenstein was somewhere between those. But is Liechtenstein worth visiting? Well, if you’ve read the title of this article, you’ll know my answer to that. But in its defense, I will say that as one of the least-visited country in Europe, visiting Liechtenstein will give you some sort of bragging rightsโ€”and it’s certainly not the worst place to stay if you’re traveling through the Alps.

Where To Stay in Liechtenstein

Okay, so there are actually more options here than you might think. I’ll break it down by cost category because I’m just that helpful.

If You’re on a Budget: Schaan-Vaduz Youth Hostel

The Schaan-Vaduz Youth Hostel is relatively affordable and ideally suited for those tight on money. Especially in Liechtenstein because this tiny country is surprisingly suited for those with a BIG budget.

Liechtenstein doesn’t really offer “budget travel” like other countries, but there are still options for the money-conscious traveler. This hostel is located near the capital city of Vaduz and has almost perfect reviews.

Is Liechtenstein Worth Visiting?

Exhibit 1: Saying You Went There is Where Your Excitement Will Peak

I have a theory. I think people visit Liechtenstein mainly because they got lost on the way to Austria or because they’re checking off their Bucket List to visit every European country.

And hey, fair enough. Everyone’s got that one thing they want to do. Plus, being able to say you’ve been to a place most people have never even heard of is pretty cool.

But once that’s done, that’s it. There are a few things to doโ€”head to the 500-year-old Farmhouse Museum, maybe, or Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein, where the royal family circulates some of their personal art collection. But activities are few and far between, so unless you have some niche interests that this micronation just happens to fulfill, you’ll be bored out of your mind.

And P.S. Do not, under any circumstances, put an unofficial tourist stamp in your very official passport. Ever. (Because that’s also one of the few things you can do there.)

Exhibit 2: Visiting Liechtenstein is an Oxymoron

All right, this one might not be entirely fair. Liechtenstein has no airport you can fly into directly, but it’s not hard to visit. All you must do is fly into Zurich and hop on a bus. Easy, right?

The real problem is logistics. From a traveler’s point of view, it doesn’t make a lot of sense to make Liechtenstein your main destination. It’ll always be a stop along the way from Switzerland to somewhere elseโ€”likely somewhere in the Alps or elsewhere in Austria.

Exhibit 3: Other Places Do It Better

That brings me to my next point. Liechtenstein’s main asset is its natural beautyโ€”vast green pastures, majestic mountains, the whole nine miles. Cue epic backdrops for photos and high-flying adventures. And, hey, kinda figuresโ€”Liechtenstein sits right in the middle of the Alpine mountain range.

The problem is that the Alps cover a wide area, and there are many more places to see. You can just… go literally anywhere else instead. And elsewhere, you don’t have to worry about running out of things to do after two hours because, oops! National border, the trail ends here. (Okay, I don’t know if that actually happens since I didn’t do any hiking in Liechtenstein, but still.)

Exhibit 4: Is Liechtenstein Worth Visiting for the Watches?

I noticed during my visit that there was a lot of shopping, especially watch shops. You’d think they’d be a rarity, what with smartphones being able to tell time, but they’re fond of the vintage look here, I guess.

Okay, I later found out that the shops I saw were probably official Rolex sellers. So, if you really want to buy a Rolex, you can find a genuine article in the capital, Vaduz. That’s something.

Counter-Point: Liechtenstein Might Be Worth It for History Buffs

In the interest of fairness, some people might be interested in this micronation for its own sake. After all, for such a small country, Liechtenstein has a pretty tumultuous history. It was founded in 1719 as part of the Holy Roman Empire. From 1806 to 1815, it was included in the Confederation of the Rhine. From 1815 to 1866, it was considered a part of the German Confederation.

Liechtenstein finally became independent in 1866. It also eliminated its army that year and still has no standing army. Remains of its rich history can still be seen in every building, church, park, and street.

Second Counter-Point: No Crowds

Another thing I want to point out in this country’s favor is that since it’s one of the least-visited places in Europe, you don’t have to worry about overcrowding. If you get claustrophobic (or just like having that extra elbow room), Liechtenstein will give you all the space you want and then some.

And like I said before, there are no bad views here. Wherever you are in Liechtenstein, youโ€™re either in the mountains or have a gorgeous view of them. There are also tons of hiking trails and the Rhine River, which snakes through the Liechtenstein/Switzerland border. And you get them largely tourist-free.

Ending Verdict: Is Liechtenstein Worth Visiting?

So, is Liechtenstein worth visiting? You already know my thoughts on this. I went, I saw, I didn’t care. But that doesn’t mean it’ll be a waste of time for everyone. Just make sure you adjust your expectations. If youโ€™re expecting a packed itinerary, youโ€™ll probably be underwhelmed.

But if youโ€™re into offbeat stops, bragging rights, and ticking another country off your list on a quick Zurich to Liechtenstein day trip, it does the job. Stick around long enough to grab a drink at a couple of Liechtenstein bars and you might find it more interesting than expected. Just donโ€™t build your whole trip around it.

Cheers, Jordan
