If youโve never been to Tahoe, lemme just say it’s not just beaches in the summer and ski resorts in the winter. Sure, taking the same old photo at Emerald Bay won’t kill you, but it’s a waste not to take advantage of all the unique things to do in Lake Tahoe. My advice? Keep it real with some hiking, drinking somewhere with a view, and taking a memorable detour in between.

Where To Stay in Lake Tahoe
I stayed at Black Bear Lodge in South Lake Tahoe, and it was a pretty sweet stay. It’s not one of those big, impersonal hotels, but a close, intimate affair with 31 rooms total, with enough amenities (like the lounge and the outdoor spa) to keep you entertained.
I’ll also award some bonus points for being centrally located within a 5-minute drive of a ton of great sites. Namely, the gondola, the Heavenly Village shops, a casino, and the mountain resort, Heavenly.

Unique Things to Do in Lake Tahoe: Where to Start
After my trip to Tahoe, I gotta say, it surprised me how much you could do that didn’t feel like the same old thing. It probably helped that I kickstarted my trip with a hot air balloon ride, but you don’t need to go over-the-top to have a good time.
And trust me, I have some experience finding awesome off-beat adventures, from the incredible things to do in South Dakota to these unexpected gems around Lake Tahoe.
So, here are just a few tips for what to do in South Lake Tahoe (and surrounding area). This and a spit-shine should help you put together a fun itinerary for an unforgettable vacation.
Sunrise Hot Air Balloon for Peak Unique
This one’s probably the crown jewel of Lake Tahoe hidden gems because not many people talk about it. This is a one-of-a-kind experience that gives you a bird’s-eye view of Nevada’s most beautiful alpine lake.
(Reminded me a bit of that helicopter ride back in Halifax.)
I have to admit, taking this on was a challenge for me because heights aren’t really my strong suit. But even then, I’d say it was worth it. Gotta push out of your comfort zone sometimes, right?

Go Hiking, But Without Turning it into a Death March
Hiking is one of the easiest answers to what to do in South Lake Tahoe, and fortunately, not every trail requires waking up at 4 a.m. and carrying survival gear. (Though some do, if you’re interested in this via ferrata.)
For example, Emerald Bay and Eagle Falls both offer classic views. For something closer to town, Van Sickle Bi-State Park gives you a quick escape into the mountains.
Personally, I went hiking on the Winnemucca Lake Trail. It was pretty easy going, but the sights were spectacular. Summertime flowers pepper the fields in red, blue, purple, and white, and Winnemucca Lake is breathtaking. It’s a different flavor from hiking the badlands of Kansas, and absolutely worth experiencing.
But that’s just my take. The Tahoe area has everything from short walks to serious backcountry routes, so choose according to your enthusiasm level and how many drinks you had the night before.

Find the Right Beaches in Lake Tahoe
Both hiking and going to the beach are probably the best free things to do in Lake Tahoe. They can be the highlight, or they can serve as padding that enhances that one part of the trip you splurge on.
Either way, they’re perfect additions to keep an itinerary from breaking the budget. Just note that some beaches and trails do require an entrance fee (though usually not much).
The “best” beach will depend on what kind of day you’re after. Sand Harbor is the most famous: pale sand, giant granite boulders, and water clear enough to see straight to the bottom. The main downside is that it’s popular (read: can get crowded). It’s also not exactly free, as it’s a state park with a $10 entrance fee, $15 for non-Nevada cars.
On the South Shore, Nevada Beach offers a long stretch of sand, while Kiva Shoreline is a good option if you want something a little more low-key. Regan Beach is another easy choice near South Lake Tahoe, especially if you’re mixing swimming with a picnic or paddle boarding.

For the Adventurous: Kayaking
Speaking of beaches, lying in the sand isn’t the only way to enjoy the water. Kayaking is a ton of fun! One of the best parts about kayaking on Lake Tahoe specifically is that it not only has places that are easy for beginners, but also rapids where experts can test their mettle.
You can get a very unique twist on this classic experience by trying LED kayaking. It might seem a little gimmicky on the surface, but it makes for a surprisingly beautiful and memorable experience.

Hit Up the Bars in Lake Tahoe
Of course, as much fun as glowing kayaks are, those are just the beginning of Lake Tahoe nightlife. So, once the sun goes down and your legs start complaining about the hike, it’s time to hit the bars.
Now, there are plenty of respectable bars in North Lake Tahoe, but the area has a bit of a unique quirk. It’s right on the California-Nevada border, so on one side, it’s a casual mountain town. On the other side, though, it’s casinos, live music, lounges, and late-night energy all the way.
This article would probably never end if I listed all the best bars in South Lake Tahoe. But for some highlights, I’d say go to Paddle House Brews, the Idle Hour, and Cold Water Brewery & Grill (went there and had dinner, too; definitely recommend!).
And, if you have time, make space for at least one brewery. My recs are the Hangar Lake Tahoe, Tahoe Brew House, and the South Lake Brewing Company.
