Not only did I just wake up on a suddenly fall morning, it’s also Monday. So it feels like all kinds of new starts. 🤷🏻‍♀️ What are YOUR goals for the week? ✅ I myself am just back from vacation and have yet to wrap my head around everything I have to do, but I’m sure it’s a super fun disaster of epic proportions. 😬 (More on vacay later.) 📸: Anyhow, I love how Iceland tries to make corrugated steel in gloomy weather look charming by painting the roofs of everything bright colors. 🌈 One of their favs seems to be red, which I read is super common with their churches as a reference to some Danish religious roots (red & white=Danish flag 🇩🇰). Might I suggest a leisurely drive down some sunny coastline 🌞 or tree-lined parkway for the fall foliage? 🍂⁣ ⁣ We were super lucky to score such a beautiful day for this Ring Road drive on Iceland's southeast coast. 🤩 The last time we visited, this was within an hour or so of where we got snowed out on a pass and, welp... we didn't get to see very much of this spectacular view. 🤷‍♀️⁣ ⁣ I hope everyone is enjoying some well-deserved downtime and decompressing. You KNOW I love a good abandoned something or othe You KNOW I love a good abandoned something or other! 🤗 Kudos to the Adventure Partner for digging this one up off @atlasobscura just for me. 🙏 This is Gardar BA64, a whaling ship that launched the same year the Titanic sunk. 🚢 Back in 1912, it was state-of-the-art and had both a steam engine AND sails. ⚓️ Eventually, it was deemed unsafe and just… run aground. (It’s technically in Skapadalur Valley, not Kleifaheidi, but IG wouldn’t let me tag that.) 🤷🏻‍♀️ It’s a little eerie just sitting there. Heimaey in Iceland's Westman Islands totally falls Heimaey in Iceland's Westman Islands totally falls into the category of little weird islands that I absolutely adore. The geology is absolutely INSANE there and the views are simply breathtaking. 🤩⁣ ⁣ One of two volcanoes on the island, Eldfell, erupted in 1973 causing an evacuation of the entire island. And, while it destroyed hundreds of homes, the eruption would actually end up adding about three-quarters of a square mile to the land mass of the island. 🌋⁣ ⁣ Iceland prevented lava flow in certain areas of the island by dumping sea water onto it, 🌊 and used the heat from the lava to generate electricity for the island. They also used volcanic debris known as "tephra" to build out their airport runway. 🛫⁣ ⁣ See? Volcanic eruptions don't have to be ALL bad. Who else here is a geology nerd? So, I thought I’d offer up a mini packing list for Iceland. (You’re gonna wanna save this one!) 📎 You should know that the weather in Iceland is pretty mercurial and prone to erratic changes.🌡 Freezing temps in July isn’t unusual, nor is going from blazing hot to pouring rain in a matter if a few hours. 🥵🥶 Just know—layers are your friend in the land of fire and ice. 🔹 Your basic t-shirts & skivvies 🔹 Base layers (even in summer) 🔹 A swimsuit (even in winter) 🔹 A thermal zip of some kind 🔹 A raincoat, gloves & beanie 🔹 Wool socks 🔹 Tevas & trail runners 🔹 I like those stretchy outdoor pants; sometimes they zip at the knees, sometimes they’re lined. 🔹 Your “big coat” (in the off-season) 🔹 Yak Trax (if you plan on solo glacier hiking and aren’t a pro trekker with full-on crampons) Besides your basic toiletries, what am I missing? HAPPY FRIDAY, Y’ALL! Keep scrolling to see a hap HAPPY FRIDAY, Y’ALL! Keep scrolling to see a happy animal. 🦭 Let’s get our weekends started off RIGHT!!! 🤗 Who recognizes THIS bad boy? …007? Jokulsarlon? It’s a fairly well-known glacial lagoon in Iceland. Cool spot. 🥶 We came back to it on our second trip and realized the first time we weren’t at the “right spot.” There’s a massive, completely overpopulated parking lot for it, apparently. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Our first trip, we just pulled over and crawled over a little hillside and had a whole section of it to ourselves. Much better than our second experience, but a cool place nonetheless. 💙 ALSO—not too far away, and just across the Ring Road, at Diamond Beach 💎—this little guy living his best life! The truth is that there were whales not too far off the coast. 🐳 Probably looking for brekkie. So we enjoyed watching this dude and a buddy of his dancing in the waves SUPER CLOSE. You KNOW I love a good abandoned something or othe You KNOW I love a good abandoned something or other! 🤗 Kudos to the Adventure Partner for digging this one up off @atlasobscura just for me. 🙏 This is Gardar BA64, a whaling ship that launched the same year the Titanic sunk. 🚢 Back in 1912, it was state-of-the-art and had both a steam engine AND sails. ⚓️ Eventually, it was deemed unsafe and just… run aground. (It’s technically in Skapadalur Valley, not Kleifaheidi, but IG wouldn’t let me tag that.) 🤷🏻‍♀️ It’s a little eerie just sitting there. Heimaey in Iceland's Westman Islands totally falls Heimaey in Iceland's Westman Islands totally falls into the category of little weird islands that I absolutely adore. The geology is absolutely INSANE there and the views are simply breathtaking. 🤩⁣ ⁣ One of two volcanoes on the island, Eldfell, erupted in 1973 causing an evacuation of the entire island. And, while it destroyed hundreds of homes, the eruption would actually end up adding about three-quarters of a square mile to the land mass of the island. 🌋⁣ ⁣ Iceland prevented lava flow in certain areas of the island by dumping sea water onto it, 🌊 and used the heat from the lava to generate electricity for the island. They also used volcanic debris known as "tephra" to build out their airport runway. 🛫⁣ ⁣ See? Volcanic eruptions don't have to be ALL bad. Who else here is a geology nerd?
