33 Travel Quotes To Indulge Your Wanderlust

Bookstore facade

Ahhh, meantime meanderings… or Global Debauchery’s ideas on what the hell to do with yourself in between your glorious travels. Mostly, I come up with creative ways to trick yourself into thinking you’re traveling when you’re not. But sometimes I like to do what I’m doing today and provide drool-worthy wanderlust inspo. Like travel quotes! So, without further ado…

A Love of Travel Quotes

Not the most original travel blog topic. But here’s a little something you might not know about yours truly: I have a minor in literature. As is the case with most minors, it’s 100% useless. But it did provide me with a great deal of enjoyment and fulfillment at the time. And, while I don’t read nearly as much as I’d like to these days, I still enjoy a nice classic every once in a while. (Accompanied by a beer.)

The point is I don’t care how many travel quote posts I’ve seen in the blogosphere because I love them all. I love gorgeous literary references and obviously I love travel. And, if you like my blog, I’d bet you do, too. Plus, the post practically writes itself! …I crack myself up sometimes. (Just kidding. It actually takes forever to put these bad boys together. Even this one.)

So, go ahead. Indulge that inner traveler! Just let go, and do it. It’s not called Global Debauchery for nuthin’. Behold—33 of Jordan’s personal favorite travel quotes,.. and happy #WanderlustWednesday.

1. Isabelle Eberhardt

“Now more than ever do I realize that I will never be content with a sedentary life, that I will always be haunted by thoughts of a sun-drenched elsewhere.”

Isabelle Eberhardt quote

2. Ryu Murakami

“Every one of a hundred thousand cities around the world had its own special sunset and it was worth going there, just once, if only to see the sun go down.”

3. Douglas Adams

“I seldom end up where I wanted to go, but almost always end up where I need to be.”

4. Kenneth Grahame

“All this he saw, for one moment breathless and intense, vivid on the morning sky; and still, as he looked, he lived; and still, as he lived, he wondered.”

Kenneth Grahame quote

5. Lisa St. Aubin de Teran

“Traveling is like flirting with life. It’s like saying, ‘I would stay and love you, but I have to go; this is my station.’”

6. William Least Heat-Moon

“The open road is a beckoning, a strangeness, a place where a man can lose himself.”

7. Jo Walton

“There’s a sunrise and a sunset every single day, and they’re absolutely free. Don’t miss so many of them.”

Jo Walton travel quote

8. Mary Oliver

“Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?”

9. Eric Weiner

“For me, a place unvisited is like an unrequited love. A dull ache that—try as you might to think it away, to convince yourself that she really wasn’t the right country for you—just won’t leave you in peace.”

10. Ralph Waldo Emerson

“Always do what you are afraid to do.”

Ralph Waldo Emerson travel quote

11. Asian Proverb

“Better to see something once than to hear about it a thousand times.”

12. Joan Didion

“I was never a big fan of people who don’t leave home. It just seems part of your duty in life.”

13. Pat Conroy

“Once you have traveled, the voyage never ends, but is played out over and over again in the quietest chambers. The mind can never break off from the journey.”

Pat Conroy travel quote

14. Dagobert D. Runes

“People travel to faraway places to watch, in fascination, the kind of people they ignore at home.”

15. John Steinbeck

“Many a trip continues long after movement in time and space have ceased.”

16. Leo Tolstoy

“I wanted movement and not a calm course of existence. I wanted excitement and danger and the chance to sacrifice myself for love. I felt in myself a superabundance of energy which found no outlet in our quiet life.”

One of my all-time favorite quotes. Often thought to be from Jon Krakauer’s Into The Wild, it’s actually a quote from Tolstoy’s Family Happiness within the text of Into the Wild. #TheMoreYouKnow

Leo Tolstoy travel quote

17. Paul Theroux

“Travel is glamorous only in retrospect.”

18. Albert Einstein

“The woman who follows the crowd will usually go no further than the crowd. The woman who walks alone is likely to find herself in places no one has ever been before.”

19. Thor Heyerdahl

“Borders? I have never seen one. But I have heard they exist in the minds of some people.”

Thor Heyerdahl quote

22. Shaun Hick

“I may be going nowhere, but what a ride.”

Shaun Hick travel quote

23. Aldous Huxley

“To travel is to discover that everyone is wrong about other countries.”

24. Pico Iyer

“Travel is like love, mostly because it’s a heightened state of awareness, in which we are mindful, receptive, undimmed by familiarity and ready to be transformed. That is why the best trips, like the best love affairs, never really end.”

25. William Shakespeare

“I like this place and could willingly waste my time in it.”

William Shakespeare travel quote

26. Benjamin Disraeli

“Like all great travelers, I have seen more than I remember, and remember more than I have seen.”

27. Jack Kerouac

“Because in the end, you won’t remember the time you spent working in the office or mowing your lawn. Climb that goddamn mountain.”

28. Jon Ronson

“I have panicked unnecessarily in all four corners of the globe.”

For my husband and #AdventurePartnerForLife who so patiently humors me in the midst of freak-outs and panic attacks in foreign countries. (Yes, even the most seasoned travelers get thrown for a loop periodically.) Always makes for a good story.

Jon Ronson travel quote

29. Martin Buber

“All journeys have secret destinations of which the traveler is unaware.”

30. Robert Louis Stevenson

“We are all travelers in the wilderness of this world, and the best we can find in our travels is an honest friend.”

31. Anna Quindlen

“The life you have led doesn’t need to be the only life you have.”

32. Kate Chopin

“The voice of the sea speaks to the soul.”

33. Robert Frost

“Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—I took the one less traveled by. And that has made all the difference.”

For my father, my all-original #AdventurePartnerForLife. An excerpt from one of his favorite poems.
